Arlington, TX— The South West Conference tabbed UT Arlington wrestler Nathan Kearney as the conference’s wrestler of the week, the SW Conference office announced on Wednesday.
The Keller, TX. Native, Kearney took first place at the American Wrestler SW Open at 125 pounds last Sunday to move to 2-2 on the young season. “Nathan had a great tournament this weekend,” said Coach Casey Hudson. “He will continue to improve each week and I am excited to see him come March.”
On Sunday, Kearney received first round bye and then won his first match by fall over Antione Green (Bacone College). He followed that win up with a close 3-1 win over team mate and last week’s SW Conference Wrestler of the Week, Michael Dauterive. “We’re very fortunate to having three very tough 125ers in the room including Conference Champion Sammy Eldridge,” said Hudson. “It’s a dog fight every day in the room.”
Kearney has his sights on national title in wrestling but his ultimate goal is a Judo Olympic gold medal in 2016. He is a Judo bronze medalist at the JR & SR Pan American Games & a 2013 Junior US Open Champion. He has competed and traveled the world representing the US in Judo.
Jordan Bridgers (197) of University of Texas & Matt Green (184) of Texas State receive honorable mentions this week. Bridgers and Green both placed second this weekend at the American Wrestler SW Open. It should also be noted Bridgers placed 4th earlier in the year in the Oklahoma City Open with wins over NAIA & NCAA DI competitors.
